Welcome to Bungay

Welcome to Bungay, "old Bungay's a wonderful town", goes the chorus to the town song, and it is true, Bungay is a wonderful town.

An attractive and thriving market town situated in a loop of the beautiful river Waveney, Bungay boasts many historic attractions including the ruins of Bigod's Castle (which is closed due to essential repairs at the moment), the ancient Buttercross - where a market is held each Thursday, and the old Borough well. These and many other sights can be enjoyed by following the Town Trail.

The Fisher Theatre, a 19th century building currently being restored to its former use, can be found in Broad Street. Why not visit our lovely Churches - St. Mary's Church, now sadly redundant, is the site of the legend of the black dog of Bungay.

Holy Trinity Church, the oldest building in the town with its round Norman tower, Emmanuel Church in Upper Olland Street which has a beautiful garden and St. Edmund's Church - an ornate Catholic Church situated next door to St. Mary's Church, all of these are well worth a visit.

Bungay has many individual and specialist shops, some of which have been established for generations, there are also a wealth of antique shops in which you can browse.

Bungay is also lucky to have fine restaurants, coffee shops, cafes and bars to refresh you during your visit. If you are visiting for more than a day you might wish to stay in one of the hotels in the town centre or you may choose to stay out of town in the surrounding area in one of many guesthouses, where you will be made most welcome.

Bungay has a modern indoor swimming pool with a slide for you to enjoy. The town also hosts three special market days each year which always prove popular, attracting as many as 15,000 people to the Spring Garden Market, the Antiques Market and the Christmas Market. These events each take over the entire length of historic Earsham Street for a day.
